More than 10,000 school support staff in Northern Ireland staged a one-day strike over planned cut-backs and redundancies. Members of NIPSA, the province’s largest public service union, Unison and the TG walked out after local education boards were asked to make savings worth pound;30 million.
Special schools were worst hit by the action, last Friday, because of their reliance on classroom assistants to help teachers with educationally or physically handicapped children.
