Sustainability doesn't need the undead

It was good to see an article about education for sustainable development in TESpro ("End of the world as we know it", 13 July). But have we really reached the point where teaching on sustainability needs the use of zombies to focus young minds?

Surely learning about the beauty and intricacy of life on Earth offers a great deal more to enjoy and celebrate and is an excellent place to start. Sustainability in schools should provide valuable learning opportunities about the real world as part of an overall plan and be able to demonstrate the concepts in practice throughout the school community. An appreciation of sustainability basics should be the first step, especially as research has already shown that teenagers can switch off when they feel "preached at". There is plenty of doom and gloom already in the media.

Schools need to take control of education for sustainable development for themselves.
