Being labelled a failure does little to motivate the majority, including schools (“A grossly unjustified use of the F-word”, TES, March 28). This is especially so when a significant number of the 638 schools not achieving 30 per cent A*-C grades at GCSE including English and maths are making improvements, often under challenging circumstances. These schools should be recognised for their efforts.
While schools should not be labelled failures, we should support aspirations to increase the number of pupils achieving qualifications. We need as many young people as possible to succeed at school and go on to further education, apprenticeships and training. The diplomas offer new opportunities for success. We must ensure all schools give pupils the opportunities they need to thrive.
