GOVERNMENT ministers have been attacked for appearing to promote an ethos of achievement in schools that neglects underlying values.
The Kirk’s education committee states: “This is consistent with a policy which insists that everything ought to be assessed in terms of success and judged by measurable results using performance indicators, targets and tables . . . it is a process which often leads to unfortunate and unhelpful comparisons being made between schools and teachers and young people.”
The Church says the impression given is that the most important things are those which are measurable and which are able to be calculated, and that anything that is not measurable does not matter nearly as much.
