The fourth Tactics Trends show at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow on November 4-5, blends a learning technology exhibition and two-day conference that is important for all those involved in evaluating the impact of information technology on the learning process.

The Dawn of the Learning Age conference will provide a comprehensive forum for decision makers and practitioners to influence the future of learning, focusing on current issues and highlighting practical solutions and future developments for effective study.

The Lifelong Learning Exhibition will feature more than 50 companies who are key contributors to technology in education. They will provide the opportunity for everyone to see and experience developments in education, training and technology. Plus there will be exhibitor seminars, a discovery zone and a cyber cafe providing free Internet access.

This is a great opportunity to see what impact ICT is having and could have on all our learning futures.

These tools can match the user’s profile to a well-researched job bank, which is updated annually.

KeyBytes is an interactive hands-on course in ICT for use in secondary schools and colleges. Supported by a student textbook and photocopiable worksheets, it progressively builds knowledge and skills, with frequent checkpoints and tests. The two levels of KeyBytes (Standard and Plus) plus flexible set-up options, en-able the course to be used with a wide age and ability range.

KeyBytes is now joined by Gary Glow-worm and his LightBytes, which also teaches basic skills in ICT but is suited best to those whose reading ability or level of concentration is insufficient to work with KeyBytes.

Microsoft’s vision for the role of technology is a simple, yet powerful educational concept. The Connected Learning Community, an initiative demonstrating that learning isn’t limited by barriers of time, distance, convenience and access, is currently being piloted in schools across Edinburgh. Microsoft is working with the city’s education department to ensure equal opportunities of access to e-mail and Internet for pupils and teachers.

The DreamWriter portable computer is able to give more children access to ICT at a realistic cost to schools. NTS has also launched the DreamWriter IT with Microsoft Windows CE. This Internet-ready machine, with full colour screen and network connectivity, will provide students with a flexible, powerful computer for most school activities.

Parents, stu-dents, teachers, and administrators can now be connected in an interactive learning environment.

Its products include the Interactive Whiteboard and PandA (Presentations and Annotations) software. By clicking on the Promethean whiteboard, the teacher can access resources on the connected PC from the front of the class, while a projector throws the PC image on to the Whiteboard for the whole class to see. The technology gives the teacher access to and use of digital resources for the benefit of the whole class and supports the role of the teacher in guiding and monitoring.

At this exhibition, Riteon will be presenting its key skills software, particularly the interactive, multimedia CD on communication at intermediate level. It is suitable for education and industry, contains 31 units, covering the entire communication curriculum for this level, whether NVQ or GNVQ (or their Scottish equivalents). Participants log on as individuals, they click and type through tutorials and activities and the software tracks how they are doing, gi ving printouts of progress. It contains nearly 110,000 spoken words; videos, 1,046 tutorial, activity and summary screens and more than 800 graphics.

Time Education will be displaying a wealth of tailored systems to meet the needs of schools, including the latest Primary PC, which is specifically designed to enhance pupils’ education across the whole of the curriculum.

The Discovery PC, a popular choice among slightly older children, boasts a huge hard disk, allowing the installation of a range of applications to suit the needs of pupils and teachers.
