Take five

It would indeed be significant, and demonstrate a considerable commitment to the education system, if the five staff development days in schools did have a staff release cost (TES, Management Update, January 19).

As they were introduced as an extra to the standard 190-day teaching year but without any additional salary, no cost was or is involved except on teacher personal time.

It is therefore vital that the considerable potential of having staff free for five days is fully exploited by the existence of structured, relevant and enjoyable staff development activities on these days.
