Sometimes Sir Michael Wilshaw gets it right (“The good, the bad ... and the plain weird”, 13 July). Not only is he by his own admission “quite odd”, but the advice he offers to would-be school leaders is wise: “Don’t be afraid to be slightly maverick. Do things out of the ordinary; don’t necessarily be a conformist.” Perhaps he will now give the same advice to his inspectors and incorporate a degree of flexibility into the inspection regime. But as Gerard Kelly remarked in last week’s editorial (although in a different context), “And maybe one day it will stop raining and a Brit will win Wimbledon.”
