Talking of gurus, Michael Fullan, the Canadian don who thinks a lot about change, was in town last week - well, in New Cumnock at any rate. Others may think of Fullan as a guru, but the man himself? He is worldly wise enough to muse that “people prefer gurus because they don’t know how to spell charlatan”.

He also cautioned against too much vision. He recalled the educational administrator who told him: “Ten years ago, if I’d had a vision they’d have locked me up. Now I can’t get a job without it.”
