Eton could drop A-levels in favour of a new qualification with harder questions, the school’s headmaster has announced.

Tony Little said A-levels forced youngsters to “think inside a very small box” and failed to cater for more intelligent pupils.

Eton could switch to the new Pre-U qualification to be launched by the Cambridge exam board in 2008. “We want the best courses that challenge our students and if that means doing the Pre-U instead of A-level, then we will do it,” he said.
