ROCK IN SEQUENCE By William Lloyd and Paul Terry Musonix Publishing (Distributor: Music Sales) Pounds 14.95.

A companion volume to Music in Sequence and Classics in Sequence, this collection of 17 hits ranges from Danny and the Juniors’ “At the Hop” to Blur’s “Best Days” and provides some fascinating points of musical comparison.

Introductory fact sheets comment on the MIDI sequencing studio and describe useful sequencer functions. Each song is provided with brief but useful background information, together with specifics on recording each sequence. A detailed transcription of each song is also included and helpfully cued to a discography so that users of the book are in a position to assimilate the stylistic features of the original recordings.

Rock in Sequence is an effective means of bridging the gap between music and technology, and will be invaluable to teachers at upper secondary level. Beginners at sequencing would be well advised, however, to start with the simpler procedures outlined in Lloyd and Terry’s earlier Music in Sequence.
