Still on goals and own goals, the Scottish Office audit unit was in a tizzy last week ahead of Donald Dewar's launch of the school attainment targets - the league tables that dare not speak their name.

After officials sent out wads of bumf and media hype to councils to coincide with last Wednesday's ceremonies, they realised councils would receive their information at least a day before the launch.

Panicky officials hurriedly got on the blower. East Lothian was told the school by school targets should not have been there yet and not to distribute the material to schools. "Don't worry," replied council officials, "we don't have it yet anyway".

Meanwhile, East Renfrewshire was coming to terms with a strange looking set of targets and bumf: Midlothian's. Little wonder some ministers want to privatise the Post Office.
