THE announcement of training salaries for postgraduate teacher-training in March has so far failed to bring applications up to last year’s level.

Applications increased since the end of March (TES, June 9). But, between September and May 13, just 24,000 applications had been received for postgraduate certificate in education courses in England, compared to 26,000 in 1999 (see table right).

Fewer applications wer received for all subjects, except PE and modern languages.

Since April, following announcement of new salaries, applications to modern languages and technology have risen compared to last year. But there has been little change in the number applying for maths and science courses.

Estelle Morris, the schools minister, gave the figures in

a reply to James Clappison,

Tory education spokesman.
