In the run-up to the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, our classes studied different topics, including sports, technology and transport.

Then Year 6 children became newspaper reporters and went round the classes making notes about what the others were doing. When they got back to their classroom, they wrote up their stories and put headlines on them. They also did a survey of what people thought of the royal family.

Staff from the local newspaper came in to help the children and their teacher recorded their work on computer. The Birmingham Post printed it as a spread. There were no photographs, but drawings by the pupils were used and we thought it looked fantastic.

Karen O’Grady is humanities co-ordinator at Eastlands Primary School, Rugby, Warwickshire.
