Teachers in Moray have joined widespread criticism of the SQA over the handling of Higher Still. A meeting of the council’s Higher Still strategy group at the end of June heard of the lack of confidence among schools. Andy Simpson, depute headteacher of Keith Grammar, said: “The consistent pattern and loss of confidence in SQA could not be emphasised enough.”

Brian Stewart, education service oficer, said that concerns about standards and quality had been expressed to the exam authority. Schools’ procedures for compiling evidence to back appeals after the results came out would therefore be “perhaps more important then ever”.

Mr Stewart said that because marking of scripts had taken place at the end of term and into the holidays the quality of some of it was also a concern.
