THE SNP will strike a distinctly pro-teacher stance as its Holyrood education manifesto is launched today (Friday) with a pledge backing the future of the Scottish Joint Negotiating Committee.

At the heart of the plans will be an all-interest group education convention to advise MSPs, reflecting a consensual approach to policy.

The convention, at arm’s length from the parliament, would investigate issues before legislation and recommend areas for reform. Two areas it may look at are the administrative burden on teachers and indiscipline in schools.

The party believes difficulties in implementing reforms such as Higher Still could have been avoided with better consultation.

A slimmed down 5-14 curriculum in the first three years of primary is another target, along with an extra pound;22 million for textbooks and library books.
