The ongoing debate over the euro fits well into aspects of the citizenship curriculum. Pupils could be carefully prepared to debate the pros and cons of Britain adopting the currency. These questions could be addressed: How would the euro change Britain? What does the pound mean to British people? Who would control the new currency? How democratic are the controls on the pound in Britain and the euro in the eurozone? Having debated some of these issues, pupils could also consider why we may hold a referendum on this change in the law but not others.
