500 apply for five classroom jobs

Five hundred people, most of them women, applied for just five posts as classroom assistants at schools in South Ayrshire, Scotland.

There had been fears the starting salary of #163;7,000 would be too low to attract assistants in five pilot primaries in South Ayrshire. The Government aims for 5,000 similar posts across Scotland.
