David Self, whose writing I normally admire, might have consulted Dr Johnson's enormous dictionary before he wrote his review of Henry Hitchings's book about it (Friday magazine April 1).

He would not then have committed an unforgivable enormity. His crime was to use the word "enormity", when what he actually meant was "vastness".
