A survey of businesses in Manchester and Merseyside has found the Government's drive to expand work experience is being undermined by a lack of small business involvement. Fifty-four per cent of small or medium-sized cmpanies had no links with schools.

Less than a quarter of these businesses said they were too busy, while 43 per cent had never been asked, according to the Knowsley Compact, which conducted the survey.
