David Almond spent his childhood on the edge of the countryside in Northumberland, where he still lives.

His first book, Skellig, has been adapted for stage and screen and his latest, The Fire-Eaters, has won both the Smarties Prize and the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year 2003. David says: "Writing is serious and difficult, but it is also like playing. It is about going out into amazing places, exploring possibilities, but all in your own head."
