Acclaim for Smith

Ronnie Smith, general secretary of the Educational Institute of Scotland, has been "acclaimed" as European president of the organisation which represents teachers worldwide. His re-appointment was confirmed at a meeting in Warsaw last week of the European arm of Education International, attended by more than 300 teachers and education staff. Delegates urged education unions to be more "assertive" in resisting spending cuts and in demanding greater investment in education.
