Action to halt pre-school closures;In brief

THE Government has come up with pound;500,000 to stem the tide of pre-school group closures while it reviews the problem. But it has challenged claims from the Pre-School Learning Alliance that up to 1,700 groups could close this year, on top of 1,500 closures up to 1998. Equal opportunities minister Margaret Hodge said government figures suggested only 100 groups closed in the year ending March 1998.
