Action on landmines

Safe Reads, an attractively funky book list and poster compiled by library staff in Tower Hamlets will tempt teenagers to read, and then keep their interest once aroused. Authors included cover the bases from Malorie Blackman to Lemony Snicket. Themes range from sex and survival to school and surrealism, by way of bullying and bulimia, prejudice and pornography, football and families. Brief reviews identify the attractions of specific volumes, while publishing details make it easy to obtain them. The convincing appeal goes beyond the boundaries of one London borough. Safe Reads is available from Tower Hamlets Children's Library Service.
