Adult way forward welcomed

2nd July 2010 at 01:00

We at the Local Education Authorities Forum for the Education of Adults are delighted with the statements of renewed and invigorated support for adult and community learning from all three of the new ministers at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and to see this clearly flagged by Vince Cable as a priority for the Skills Funding Agency for the current year.

As local authorities, we have taken up the challenge to ensure we unlock learning for adults across all local authority departments and link with statutory and voluntary bodies, businesses and other local learning providers to make sure that, between us, we meet local learning needs.

We provide a wide range of training and learning opportunities. Our aim is to use learning to support resilient, active and healthy communities. We know that a small investment in adult learning pays major dividends by saving on other local budgets.

We hope the ministers' warm words are followed with an ongoing commitment to adult and community learning and we look forward to working with the new ministers to shape the vision.

Gwen Harris, North West representative, Local Education Authorities Forum for the Education of Adults.
