Teachers from ethnic minorities are keener for promotion than their white colleagues, despite gaining vastly fewer leadership posts, according to a new survey.
Research from the Department for Education and Skills found that 7 per cent of ethnic-minority teachers said they would seek promotion at every opportunity, compared to 4 per cent of white teachers. The proportion of ethnic-minority teachers who said they were not interested in promotion was only around 13 per cent - half the proportion for other teachers.
The figures, from a survey of 2,158 teachers, are in stark contrast to statistics which show the numbers of ethnic-minority teachers who have succeeded in being promoted. While 26 per cent of ethnic-minority teachers felt their ethnicity had positively influenced their career, 41 per cent said its effect had been negative.
