The proposal for education departments to provide "taster courses" and universities and colleges to provide school-centred initial training interests me. Prospective teachers will thus be able to gain first-hand experience of the atmosphere and ethos prevailing in many schools. They can become acquainted with the conditions in which they will be expected to teach and appreciate the facilities with which they will be expected to perform their job.
I can think of no initiative more likely to discourage prospective teachers.
