The Basic Skills Agency has won acclaim for its Storysacks initiative to promote reading in the home. The scheme, which has just won a European Parents' Association award, involves brightly-coloured sacks containing props and toys to bring a story to life and encourage parents to read with their children. It has been taken up by 95 per cent of UK ocuncils.
