Scottish pupils have been excelling themselves in the past week, fundraising for good causes.

The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities announced on Wednesday that pupils throughout the country had raised just under pound;18,000 for the young people of Beslan and their families who were caught up in the massacre in the Russian town last authumn.

And an even more remarkable effort saw one of Scotland's smallest authorities, Highland, raise more than pound;68,000 for the Asian tsunami disaster fund as a result of a "pan Highland" endeavour by the 33,000 pupils in its 228 schools.
