Beacons to burn twice as brightly;In brief

BEACON schools will more than double in number from September. Standards minister Estelle Morris announced this week that 125 new schools had been awarded beacon status, joining the 75 who had signed up already. The beacon schools are eligible for grants of up to pound;50,000 in return for spreading their expertise among other schools.
