I personally found Ariane Sherine's "article" blasphemous, but the reason I write is that it is a totally one-sided position.
Evidence exists for the Christmas story, and it shows that the Bible is a text of historical significance and not, as Ms Sherine states, a book containing "a story much like The Very Hungry Caterpillar".
Christians would not even try to argue that Jesus was born on December 25. However, just because we don't know the date of something which happened 2000 years ago doesn't mean it didn't happen!
Every day I feel blessed that "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). We should believe this, and the awesome events that followed.
