Best foot forward

Walk to School week runs from May 21 to 25, so why not abandon that car and do just that. You'll not only be doing your bit to cut pollution but it'll make you feel better too.

Research shows that levels of pollutants inside a car are at least three times worse than on the pavement, so driving to school is not just bad for the environment, it's bad for your health.

The morning school run is now one of the most polluting journeys as cars produce more greenhouse gases on short journeys when the engine is cold and there's constant stopping and starting in traffic jams.

Walk to School week is a joint campaign by Travelwise and Living Streets.

And who knows, you might even find that it turns out to be quicker and less stressful than taking the car.
