Beyond the boot camp image

Thank you for the tone and content of your article last week on the future of the Skill Force programme in Scotland ("Full ahead for Skill Force").

The fact that our instructors are, for the most part, former members of the armed forces has too often been seized on by tabloid journalists more interested in sensational headlines than accurate reporting.

Our students are understandably upset and disheartened when they read stories about "boot camps" and "parade-ground discipline", particularly as they bear no relation to their everyday experiences in Skill Force at their local school.

By contrast, your report concentrated on the tangible achievements of our students and independent evaluation of the programme itself.
