For those schools planning a new science block or making changes to their present one, "Science Accommodation in Secondary Schools: a Design Guide" is a buildings bulletin from the Department for Education which is obligatory reading. It looks at planning the suite, types of layout, the distribution of services, health and safety, storage space and costs and draws attention to regulations and guidelines.

For years, Ysgol Bryn Alyn school in Wrexham has been dogged by vandalism and theft. Thousands of pounds have been spent replacing stolen equipment, repairing damage and meeting rising insurance costs. Since the installation of a remote CCTV surveillance system, however, the school has seen "a significant decrease in theft and vandalism", says head Jim Wild.

The British Telecom system comprises four cameras located around the school and linked to a central control room at Clywd Council Shire Hall in Mold, where the situation at the school is monitored around the clock. Because areas are only filmed when a sensitive infra-red motion detector triggers the system into action, costs are kept to a minimum.

Further information on the system can be obtained from BT on 0800 515550.
