Norton Medlicott winner May 17

Sir Martin Gilbert, Sir Winston Churchill's official biographer and one of Britain's leading historians, is giving the Historical Association Noton Medlicott Winner 2005 lecture at Foyle's bookshop, Charing Cross Road, London WC1, 6.30pm for 7pm. His books include: The Holocaust: The Jewish Tragedy, twin histories on the First and Second World Wars and the three-volume A History of the Twentieth Century. pound;10; pound;7 HA members (includes refreshments).

Walking Bus record June 15

Teachers are invited to register now for this record attempt starting at 10am. Road safety charity, Brake, and Asda are hoping that up to 50,000 UK schoolchildren will simultaneously take part in a short, supervised walk.

Schools will receive a free road safety teaching pack, guidance notes, lesson plans, posters, worksheets and free stickers. A walking bus is a safe way for children to get to and from school, walking in pairs, hand-in-hand, along the safest possible route, under adult supervision.

Each child is asked to raise at least pound;1 for Brake, but fundraising is not essential.

Performing arts grants

The Clore Duffield Foundation has launched a scheme that will run for five years, awarding a total of pound;1 million to arts projects aimed at children and young people aged up to 18. Schools and arts organisations are invited to submit projects covering, for example, opera, dance, music, theatre and the spoken word. Applications will be considered twice a year, with closing dates in April and September. Guidance notes and application forms at www.cloreduffield.org.uk
