Candidates to square off today

26th November 2004 at 00:00
Four candidates vying to replace David Hart as general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers will deliver presentations to its national council today.

Contenders, whose identity remains a closely-guarded secret, were shortlisted from more than 20 applicants. After NAHT meetings with the Secondary Heads Association earlier this month, some wondered whether candidates might include John Dunford, SHA general secretary, but he is understood not to be interested.

Joint NAHTSHApolicy statements will be produced as a result of that meeting, prompted by a 2003 NAHT conference motion calling for merger talks. However, both leaderships have said that uniting the associations could be a lengthy process.

After today's presentations, an NAHT council panel will interview leadership candidates and make a decision on December 6.
