The Government is to let Scottish and Northern Irish teachers moving to England and Wales receive the same golden hellos of up to pound;5,000 as staff from EU countries.

The move comes after Grainne McCay, 23, a Northern Irish teacher, appealed to Alan Johnson, the Education Secretary.

She welcomed the news. "We've been hard done by," she said. "We're pulling the Government out of a recruitment rut."
