Change of stripes

Ian Smith, an IT expert, had become disillusioned with the corporate world and was looking for a new challenge when he heard about Transition to Teaching.

He took the option of redundancy from the services company where he worked and is now completing a PGCE in physics at Warwick University.

Mr Smith, 50, had 20 years' experience in the IT industry, which he joined after completing degrees in engineering and management science.

"It's really refreshing to be able to help people and I now feel like I have a sense of purpose," said Mr Smith, who is also a chair of governors at a school in Warwickshire, where he lives.

"I enjoy working with all the distinct personalities. It was a big decision to change careers and I really had to do the maths to make sure my family would be alright."
