It's always a good time to buy a child a book, but if you need another excuse see the centre pages feature on Barnabas and Anabel Kindersley's Celebration!. This guide to festivals around the world provides year-round reasons for gift-giving. 101 of the Best, the TES's definitive children's books guide, offers help to those choosing books for Christmas, Hanukkah and beyond (shop early for World Book Day next year).
The recommendations, intended to embrace the most outstanding new books of the year and the best new editions of classics, include poetry, fiction and non-fiction titles, from pre-schoolers' board books to teenage fiction. Many have been praised by TES reviewers during the past year. Where appropriate, the original review date has been given. Others will be reviewed in later issues - The TES continues to feature good children's books every week.
The 101 books were published either in 1997 or late 1996, with reviews appearing in 1997. The two exceptions are the junior and senior winners of this year's TES Information Book Awards. These appear on page 10 alongside the shortlisted titles and more details about the awards. Also, see our reviewers' choices of the top audio and video tapes. And we have 101 books to give away - details on the back page.
