LOCAL authorities were given details this week of their share from the Government's Pounds 15 million three-year additional expenditure on childcare.
The announcement, which followed a meeting of the Scottish Childcare Board, reveals the distribution to each council, based on population and weighted towards disadvantaged areas.
A total of Pounds 91 million is being committed to childcare over the next three years, of which Pounds 15 million is for new places, information helplines amd targeted support for families with very young children. That portion raises funding for council childcare expenditure from Pounds 3. 8 million to Pounds 5 million a year.
Sam Galbraith, Minister for Children, also announced that four parent members were to be appointed to the Childcare Board instead of two. They are Eva Asante, a lone mother from Cumbernauld; Susan Burns, a Gaelic-medium parent from Skye; Laurence Reid, a playgroup member from Stow, Selkirkshire; and Rhona Steel, chairperson of an out-of-school care group in Castlemilk.
The four were chosen from among 200 applicants.
