EMPLOYMENT minister Tessa Jowell has appointed George Sweeney, principal of Knowsley community college, to the New Deal task force. Its members include employers, trade union leaders and people from the voluntary sector. The task force was set up by the Government in 1997 to monitor the New Deal scheme, advising ministers on employer responses and stimulating action.

Guide to concerns GUILDFORD college of further and higher education has

produced a free guide to the new curriculum 2000 for parents and students. Responding to concerns that the new system could devalue A-levels, it explains how employers and universities can compare different combinations of subjects and qualifications.
