GORDON Aitken of the Responsive College Unit, (TES, January 29) is right when he says: "Colleges are key economic players".

Indeed for the past three years the Further Education Development Agency has done much to develop this neglected aspect of the FE role.

Many colleges realise the crucial role that they should play in sustainable local economic development. This, combined with their strategic role in regional economic development points us to issues of even deeper significance for the role of colleges.
