RM will have to look over its shoulder, however, as competition is likely to get intense. The giant US information service, CompuServe, has just added Internet connection to its extremely easy-to-use services, all for Pounds 6.50 a month. This covers unlimited access to its basic range of resources, including electronic mail, plus three hours on the Internet (excess is Pounds 1.50 an hour).

In September, BT's on-line education staff will launch its own Internet service for schools, BT CampusWorld, with a heavy emphasis on the curriculum.
