January 27. THE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION HISTORY CONFERENCE. The conference will take place at John Cabot City Technology College, Kingswood, Bristol. It aims to give teachers the opportunity to update themselves on the latest developments in the teaching of history in the light of the new 14-19 curriculum. The new proposed GCSE and A-level syllabuses to be introduced in 1996 and 1997 will be discussed. Fees: Pounds 75 or Pounds 53 (members). Details: 0171 735 4326.


A new one-year course designed to improve the skills of classroom assistants at the University of Hertfordshire's Watford campus. Funded by the Department of Employment and Education, it offers part-time training leading to specialist teacher assistant status and is aimed at all classroom assistants, such as parents, who are often employed to help teachers of children with special needs. The trainees will be assigned tutors and staff who will supervise their work in the classroom and they will learn how to support pupils in key stage one of the National Curriculum (five to seven-year-olds).
