* Consultation on changes to the teachers' contract proposed under the workload agreement closed this week.

The NUT has called for a regulation banning teaching assistants from taking classes unaccompanied. It also wants the annual cover limit reduced from 36 to 30 hours and guaranteed teacher planning time in minimum one-hour blocks.

Among the signatories to the agreement, there is broad approval of the proposals but both head- teachers' associations warn that adequate funding must be available and also express reservations over the transfer of exam invigilation duties from teachers.
