Private companies are to be given control of one of the Government's key initiatives for getting the long-term unemployed back into work. Pilot projects affecting 6,000 people were announced by Education and Employment Secretary Gillian Shephard this week.

Government cash will only be paid to companies under the Contract for Work scheme if the people are placed in and remain in a job following their retraining.
