German writer Cornelia Funke's TheThief Lord, has won this year's Askews'

Torchlight Children's Book Award. More than 200 schools took part in the second year of the award, launched by Askews Library Services to highlight books children love to read rather than the ones chosen for them by adults.

The award is voted for solely by children. The author is well-known on the Continent but this is her first UK award.
