Victoria Glendinning on novel writing, Ray Davies (of Kinks fame) on songwriting, Hermione Lee on biography and autobiography, Lynne Reid Banks on writing for children, and Anthony Minghella on screenwriting are just a few of the courses on offer in three rural centres. On these courses, 16 students live with two professional writers for four and a half days and write. The centres are: Lumb Bank, West Yorkshire (014222 843714); Moniack Mhor, Scottish Highlands (01463 741675) and Totleigh Barton, Devon (01409 231338). Fee: Pounds 290 (grants available). Arvon also has programmes for teachers and trainees and for schoolscolleges.

APRIL 12 CO-DEPENDENCY. APRIL 19 GIVING VOICE:AN APPROACH TO HEALTH AND HEALING. APRIL 26 SOLUTION FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY. Workshop News courses at Bretton Hall, Leeds University, Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The first will focus on forms of co-dependency from alcoholic to workaholic and the third on a radically different therapy model developed by Steve De Shazer. Sadler's Wells and Bretton Hall performing arts course at Powerhouse Theatre, Garden Street, Wakefield, are offering an introduction to the basic principles of simple lighting design, running a lighting board and sound desk, and hands-on experience in asmall theatre.
