COURSES * The National Association for the Teaching of English is organising a series of in-service training courses this autumn on aspects of literacy. With the general title of Giving Literacy a Lift, the courses will focus on the primary curriculum or specific areas of the secondary English curriculum.

Those in Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham (September 28, October 7 and October 15) will concentrate on flexible ways of planning and delivering the literacy hour in primary schools, led by Sandra Farmer.

On November 24, in Bristol, Margaret Meek Spencer and Lorraine Dawes will look at literacy as a whole in the primary school.

On October 9 and October 16, in Bedford and Leeds, Lyn Ranson leads a course on literacy in the secondary school, focusing on language across the curriculum. George Keith will explore strategies for teaching grammar in Oxford (November 19) and Telford (November 20) and Terry Furlong and Rob Stannard will look at literacy and ICT in the secondary school in Cardiff (November 10) and Bristol (November 11).

Peter Thomas, the Northern Examination and Assessment Board's principal examiner and moderator for GCSE English literature, will lead a course on raising achievement at key stage 4 in Leicester (November 25) and Doncaster (November 26).
