Cover head rapped

27th April 2001 at 01:00
Education Secretary David Blunkett this week told schools that in-service training for teachers should take place in the holidays if necessary. His comments came as ministers rounded on headteacher Ralph Hedley. The head had decided to educate 94 children for five das in the hall at Queensway community junior in Thetford, Norfolk, before Easter. Two teachers were on courses and he could not find supply cover. Mr Blunkett said heads use the five statutory training days, pay teachers to train after-hours, or find cover.
