Cult of Mary

28th January 2005 at 00:00
Has Mary Bousted, newish general secretary of the Association of Teacher and Lecturers, been taking tips from the once-ubiquitous Nigel de Gruchy, former head of the NASUWT?

The new edition of the ATL's Report magazine features a quote from the union's head in almost every article in its first 10 pages, including two Bousted-penned articles and two photographs of her comely visage.

Sherry Jespersen, director of communications, explains: "She is incredibly well-informed and there is a whole breadth of things that she has experienced ... As far as the pictures go, she takes a good picture: she is young, she is bright, she is sparky." Are we seeing the first sproutings of a de Gruchy-like personality cult at the ATL?
